Alas, a sell out

Filed under: Crapitalism, Feminism — Laurelin @ 10:57 pm

I understand that Ampersand (of Alas, A Blog) has lately found himself in financial difficulties and therefore has sold his website to pornography advertisers. Unsurprisingly, this has won him much deserved criticism from the radfem bloggers, who feel, for some reason that making money out of the subordination of women is kinda, you know, crappy. But I like to think of myself as helpful and thoughtful in the good ol’ feminine tradition, so I hereby present Ampersand with some advice he might like to take the next time he feels like selling out.

10 things to do instead of selling your website to advertisers of porn

  1. Find a cheaper website.
  2. Cut out all of the antifeminist comments on your website, and voila! suddenly you don’t need nearly as much bandwidth and therefore pay less.
  3. Get a paper round.
  4. Take out a loan.
  5. Busk.
  6. Sell your website to those who advertise woman friendly products.
  7. Shower off that male privilege that drips from you.
  8. Think.
  9. Take notice of all the feminists and all the women who have testified as to the harm of pornography, who have analysed the script of pornography, who have worked with sex industry survivors, who are sex industry suvivors…  just do some research already.
  10. Actually give a damn about women.

  1. I’ve just posted a small round-up of these posts — it’s in no way inclusive, but I would’ve included your post had I known.

You got that right, Laurelin! That’s one thing no one’s mentioned yet, that one reason Amp was SO widely read was, people loved to buy popcorn and watch round 2345734829756934 of misogynists trashing radfems, radfems getting pissed, and Amp telling us to calm down.

  5. God, and you know? I’m even a little bit surprised, which is not good. It never even occurred to me that he could go so low.

  11. I don’t understand the technology here, suffice to say that the whole situation stinks – amp links to my blog, does this mean I am supporting the porn stuff in any way? Even if this isn’t the case, I’m thinking of asking him to remove the link anyways.

Just to put your mind at rest, no, his linking to you does not support porn. In fact the reverse: it reduces (infinitesimally) the value of the link on his site to the porn reviews.

  13. Is that true, Daran? I would genuinely like to know. I’m a little suspicious because I guess I fall into the category of ‘Amp’s critics who are not as good as Amp’ on your blog. Your nasty and venomous comments against Heart don’t inspire much confidence in me either, I’m afraid.

  17. “I’m back, I’m back as a matter of a fact” (gang song for the Capt) Aye aye sir, just adjust your loo-rolls and imagine that the complete sorry sell-out did not even happen.

*sheesh* Capt maybe you need to move on from being a porn apologist.
